Flashback to the 60's, 70's, 80's, Nineteenth century as you head for the woods
with Muir and Thoreau except you’re Buddhist now, leaving
behind your desires for smaller cellphones and bigger cars,
cars which can conquer the cliffs and mountains easily and keep
the world from getting too close, but you want God, you want the Spirits,
you want the Peace and you’ll kill anyone who stands
in the way of being free of desire in Nivana with Cobain and drugs that get you there
quicker, because life is short, baby, and you’ve got to live it while you can
and too soon you’ll be 30, 40, 50, going 60 miles per hour
but that black tar of those social cigarettes is coming back in your coughing
and you wonder where HE went, the one that got away, the one who made you love him
like the God you give your kids and try to believe in yourself
because you want the Spirit, you want the Peace, and the one
standing in the way is just you, baby, isn’t it, because you’re going too fast
for Buddha and your car’s so big you can’t find that cell phone you wanted
so badly to get there that you’re driving fast, to get a job, get a paycheck, get a husband,
get a kid, get a LIFE because the one you’ve got is too old, it’s outdated like that four year-old
computer you just gave a gold watch and put out to pasture, and now you’re flying,
past the skyscrapers tumbling, and the suburbs expanding into boondocks, and pastures
and into the hills, up the cliffs to the top of that mountain with Muir and Thoreau
who loved nature because they couldn’t have it and neither can you, but you can SEE it
through SPF windows, sitting in your leather seats watching DVDs with your kids of people younger who’re still living IN the world and not next door and as you watch you open your door
and step outside and feel the wind that’s blowing by oh so fast and you breathe in fresh air like it’s the first time, and it is the first time, it’s time, baby, to just
slow
down.
